I'll be praying with a shot glass tonight.

If anyone at all reads this, first I would be would be shocked and second I am going to get shit for this. Since I've been playing shitty acoustic music one of my top three favorite bands has been Dashboard Confessional. Over the years there has been a backlash of "I hate whiny bands that just sing about how sad they are and that's all Dashboard does and if you like them you have no taste in music. They just suck, dude." To each his own but the dude can sing and write a mean song.
The Shade of the Poison Trees got little press or fanfare compared to A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar or Dusk and Summer but is just as solid if not better than the rehashing of "Hands Down". While I can't vouch for Chris Carraba as a dude, he may or maynot be a douche but I've never met him but he seems to be an alright guy, I have yet to hear a bad album from him.

So I guess what all that babble leads to this.
1) If you like a band that your friends don't like, it's ok. Don't let anyone pick on you for liking something.
2) Go buy The Shade of Poison Tree's by Dashboard Confessional.
3) Watch this:

It's Saturday. Go drink and have a good time.

Two in a row? Look out Cal Ripken Jr.

This isn't really a post as much as it is a public service. If you stumbled on this or one of your friends tricked you into coming to this page please know that this isn't a normal awesome post. This is a super awesome post. I use super awesome because I am here to set forth a challenge. If you can listen to Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" and be upset at any point up to 15 minutes afterward, I will crown you sad bastard of the year. That song is currently fighting with REO's "Roll with the changes" as best rock song with more than one guitar solo in it, ever.

Don't believe me? Try it out:

I rest my case.

More sometime.

She had a tattoo that looked like a gun...

Update time.

Sometime in this year I played a show with a band called SaintSeneca. I probably should be more specific with the time period but my head is not a good place for remembering dates. I also suppose that none of that really matters. I could've just said that I played with them two days ago. Oh well. At anyrate, SaintSeneca is one of the most upbeat folk bands I've heard. They are also the first I've seen play the floor and a trashcan like a drum and have it not be lame. They have an ep on itunes. It's like 4 bucks go buy it.
My two favorite songs are, "God Bones" and "Shipwrecked".

I guess there will be another post at some point.

There's a snake in my Boot.

Click this thing!

If this is half as good as the new 500 Miles to Memphis that is being written/recorded now, the new cd will be awesome.
Will I ever call a new album anything other than a new cd? Probably not. I had tapes growing up. Then I had cd's. I do own records but they weren't a mainstay. Forever cd's it shall be.
To be honest I didn't check and see if I already wrote anything about 500 MTM but I am just going to assume I did and if I didn't I will at some point soon I guess.

I guess that is all for right now.

In personal news, I am getting the new Blue Sky Tomorrows cd in order. I have another project idea for MC BearAttack. We will see how that turns out.

We out.

Self loathing abound.

Keeping up with a blog is like swearing off drinking, smoking, and women. You just can't do it. I do have good intentions to keep this up but you'll just have to keep checking back for updates. I guess it will be like a special treat if I put something new up.

I suck. I know.

But.

Cory Branan does not suck at all. I saw him last week in Cincinnati and he might be the best show I've seen ever. There weren't too many people in the crowd but he can make a guitar sound like a machine gun and an angel. His smokey voice would make you believe him if he told you he just robbed a bank and he's on the run or he just got his heart broken by some dame so he burnt her house down. Find bootlegs, buy his cd's, buy his shirts, most importantly go see his live show when he comes around. He is also a really nice guy if you get to talk to him. He said my shirt was cool, I assured him that I am not cool so no worries about getting a big head or anything.

I think this says it all.

I guess I'll post something else at some point in time.

Moderately short post that isn't important.

I guess for post two of today I'm just going to throw out a myspace page and let you choose to go to it or not.

www.myspace.com/ashwednesday

These dudes aren't really my friends in real life, but I have met them and they are all friends with one of my friends so I guess technically they are my friends. Anyway, they are good. Every song they play is good. My favorite song on their myspace is "Piece of mind". "Firewall" is their big single round these parts, but like I said, all of their shit is good. It's the best part of 90's catchy rock with blazing guitar parts and all the good stuff about being alive right now. You won't be disappointed to hear these dudes.

I would like to point out that all the lead guitar is played by the guy singing. Holy jeez. He is awesome.

(Listen very closely for the cover at the end of the song...)

I'll try to post more things soon.

What up Detroit?

So here is what's going on. Mark is working on a new website layout, it is pretty badass looking. I suck at updating the blog but this is kind of the base because no one really knows about it currently but the new site links to it so maybe people will waste time here. I think I will go with multiple posts today.

#1. Seven Mary Three

I don't really have to say much about this band. Yes is it the same band that played "Waters Edge" and "Cumbersome" and those songs are badass. However, I've always been a huge fan of their acoustic stuff like "Lame", "Lucky" and what ever else they played acoustic. Their newest cd "dayandnight driving" or however they hell they spelled it blew me away. This is one of those cd's that you can listen to all the way through. All killer and no filler, I like to call it (unncessicary Sum 41 refference but I went there). My favorites are as follows:

Jason Ross has a great beard. The songs are well written. They still rock the faces off of everyone they come across.

It should be noted that I couldn't find my favorite song from the new cd "Things I stole". It's awesome.

More today I guess.

F(g) - the metal band name for dorks.

So I didn't post anything Saturday and Mark has already yelled at me for it so I will try to get my act together and post a bit more in the upcoming days.
Today however is not one of those days.
Today is more of a "Courtney does shameless self promotion" type of day.

www.myspace.com/blueskytomorrows

The notorious BST is getting back into the swing of things. Really I just booked a show in a side room at the Dame and I'm excited about it. I guess that is it really.

Things I miss today:

Sarah Coleman took down all of her music a long time ago and I miss it. She sang very well. I have some stuff we recorded for her but we can't do anything with it because we don't want to distribute her crap without permission. Lame. You guys would enjoy it a lot (of course by you guys I mean myself, because I'm convinced that no one else reads this lame excuse for a blog).

A decent place to play in Richmond that doesn't involve drunk frat boys yelling for "Free Bird".
Livewire, why did you leave us?

I will try to update this more, specifically with bands that aren't part of POK that I like.

I guess that is all.
We out.

(If you don't get the title it is read as F of G...or effigy...it isn't that cool.)

Saturday is alright for fighting.

So it's Saturday, so I'm a liar. I guess I will do some more blogtation. Today will be.....

NeverShoutNever!

Here is a list of reasons it is good:
1)Beats that are so catchy you will most likely ...like them
2)He sings his own background vocals.
3)Amy likes the twinkly piano in the background of BigCityDreams
4)Stephanie thinks that he sounds like the Format
5)Mark dances to the white boy funkiness
6)I like the overall danceability
7)He sounds like a young Matt from Relient K

I should try harder to write these blogs.

Anyhow, go here and listen and buy stuff from here:

And now for something unrelated.

I guess that will wrap up this weekend. More by next Saturday.

We can both be girls at the same time...

Today I will talk about Jessica Lea Mayfield. She is awesome. I guess that is all really. I would suggest that you go download her cd from itunes or buy it from her website www.myspace.com/jlmayfield. I would suggest that you also buy her vinyl, because it looks totally awesome.
She sounds and looks like an angel that was hurt by some heartless bastard, and her lyrics reflect it. Her voice is a breath of fresh air into a music scene that sounds pretty much the same. I love her, so you should too.

Tracks that I like a lot:

So go support JLM and buy some stuff from her. She seems cool and her voice slays me.

I'm sure there will be more posts this week.

courtney.

Sometimes I fool myself.

So I have committed to updating this site every Saturday. As you may notice, today is Thursday so this is a special post. This one is to promote two songs.
The first song is one that I heard on my mp3 player this morning and it is an acoustic (more like piano) version of one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time: Wrecking Ball by Harvey Danger.

The second is the Notorious BST (that is what he likes to be called when drunk and playing , Blue Sky Tomorrows all the rest of the time) covering Cute without the E (Cut from the team).

So check back every Saturday for more music that is good. Until then go listen to Whitney Acke, Blue Sky Tomorrows, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and 500 Miles to Memphis. (I'm 100% sure that all of those bands will be reviewed soon.)

Courtney from Pretty OK is not a girl.

Alright, here is how this thing is going to roll. I like to find out about new bands that don't suck and I kind of don't like other music blogs that are elitist and douches in general. So I will update this blog with music that I like. I will review/kiss-ass to the bands and that will be all. Chances are this will be not updated daily but it will be a good waste of time for me. Hopefully you like some of the bands that will eventually reviewed here.

POK.
